Serica Offers Digital Asset Custody

Custody Solutions

Serica Trust & Agency offers custodial services in respect of a range of assets, such as cash, shares, bonds and documents (e.g. share certificates). With effect from February 2024, we are pleased to announce that Serica will extend its custodial services to also cover digital assets (such as cryptocurrencies).

How it works

Serica has partnered with copper.co, a market-leading digital asset custody platform. Clients transfer their digital assets to their own unique wallet within the Serica “vault” on the Copper platform. Serica holds the legal title to all digital assets in its “vault” and holds the beneficial title to the assets in each wallet on trust for the relevant client pursuant to a bespoke form of custody agreement entered into between Serica and that client.

Using MPC (Multi-Party Computation) technology, the Serica vault is controlled by three individual shards that are created and held in isolation at all times by three independent parties – Serica, Copper and an independent, trusted third party. Two of the three shards are required to effect any transfer of assets from the vault – typically those held by Serica and Copper (with the third kept as a back-up).

Further security measures – such as whitelisting – are available to protect against fraudulent transfers of assets, and will be discussed with clients on a case-by-case basis.

When a client wishes to instruct a transfer, it gives such instruction directly to Serica in accordance with the protocol set out in the custody agreement. Serica then liaises with Copper to complete the requested transfer.

  • Liquidators and other insolvency professionals who need to take possession of digital assets quickly and efficiently to prevent theft or value erosion.
  • Other institutional clients looking for a straightforward, cost-effective way to hold digital assets. Our solution is particularly relevant to those who need a custody solution for digital assets of smaller value, which may not meet the minimum fee threshold imposed by other custodians.
